Excise House – Weymouth: Public House/Restaurant

AQS photo: case study - Excise House, Weymouth

Our client is a long established and respected company which has built a reward winning reputation as Britain's premier hospitality chain. Situated in the main tourist area of Weymouth “North Quay”, the site was originally the “Customs and Excise” building and has since been converted into a museum, shopping centre, restaurant and bar.

The Brief:

Our client appointed our services in order to tackle two issues. Firstly the air quality as a result of smoke pollution and the second as a result of heat build up due to an open plan kitchen and sealed double glazed windows, which had been installed to prevent noise pollution due to weekend entertainment.

The system also needed to take into consideration the nature of the listed building and be sympathetic to the resultant acoustic problems associated with installing a ventilation system.

The solution:

Air Quality Services in association with the local planning office, building control and client designed a ventilation system incorporating high pressure backward curved centrifugal fans mounted at high level on top of the shopping centre and then ducted to the appropriate areas within the bar/restaurant.

The result:

Installation of these fan units on the roof of the establishment together with strategic sighting has ensured that noise levels are kept to a minimum and that the aesthetics of the building are not compromised. Due to the high performance of these units they are able to extract air from the bar/restaurant area sighted in excess of 70mtrs from the fans themselves. An internally mounted Air Handling Unit is supplying clean filtered air which, with its inbuilt heater, prevents any cold spots in winter and by upgrading the extract fan for the kitchen canopy to incorporate the additional heat generated by appliances Air Quality Services have successfully met our clients brief.
